DAVID A. WILSON, M.D.
Dr. Wilson is from Bloomington, Indiana. He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University and attended medical school at Indiana University. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California. Dr. Wilson also completed his Electrophysiology Fellowship at the Hospital of Good Samaritan in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Wilson is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Electrophysiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American College of Physicians, and also a member of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE).

His special interests include Electrophysiology, Pacemakers and RF ablations.

DAVID W. SHONKOFF, M.D.
Dr. Shonkoff is originally from Brooklyn, New York. He received his undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Cornell University Cooperative Hospitals and Emory Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Shonkoff is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Nuclear Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, member of the Medical Association of Georgia, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, the American Society of Echocardiography, and a founding member of the American College of Nuclear Cardiology.

Dr. Shonkoff specializes in Clinical Cardiology, Adult Congenital Heart Diseases, and Nuclear Cardiology. He is also an active investigator of new medications to treat acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure. He is currently Co-Director of Cardiology at Gwinnett Medical Center.

E. EDWARD PROCTOR, M.D.
Dr. Proctor was born in Union, South Carolina. He received his undergraduate degree from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. He attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Proctor's internship and residency were completed at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. His cardiology fellowship was completed at the Medical University of South Carolina where he was named Outstanding Cardiology Fellow.

Dr. Proctor is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Gwinnett/Forsyth Medical Society and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Proctor is past Chief of Medicine at Gwinnett Medical Center and past Chief of Staff at Emory Eastside Medical Center .

Dr. Proctor's special interests include Cardiac Catheterization, Coronary Angioplasty, and Nuclear Cardiology.

F. Michael Toca, M.D.
Dr. Toca is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. He received his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA where he graduated with honors. He attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio where served as the student body president and was selected to be in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors society. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School where he was selected to be chief resident at the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Hospital. Dr. Toca completed fellowships in both Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University Of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Dr. Toca is a member of American College of Cardiology, The Heart Rhythm Society and Association of Black cardiologists

His special interests include electrophysiology and understanding health disparities. He specializes in atrial fibrillation ablation, biventricular pacemakers, ventricular tachycardia ablation, pacemakers/ICDs and other ablative procedures.

LANCE B. FRIEDLAND, M.D.
Dr. Friedland is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. His Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology Fellowship were completed at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Friedland is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the Medical Association of Georgia. He is currently the Director of the Cardiac Cath lab at Emory Eastside Medical Center.

His special interests include Cardiac Catheterization, Coronary Angioplasty, Coronary Atherectomy, Pacemakers, Echocardiography and Echo doppler.

LAURENCE M. LESSER, M.D.
Dr. Lesser is originally from Brooklyn, New York. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He attended medical school at the State University of New York and he completed his Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology Fellowship at the Emory Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Lesser is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. He is a member of the Medical Association of Georgia.

His special interests include both non-invasive cardiology and pediatric cardiology, and he is on the staff of the Children's Medical Services (Georgia Department of Human Resources) in cardiology. He was the Medical Officer for the rowing and canoe-kayak venue for the 1996 Summer Olympic games. Dr. Lesser is also on the clinical faculty in cardiology at Grady Hospital, an affiliate of Emory University.

LOUIS I. HELLER, M.D.
Dr. Heller is from New York City. Dr. Heller received his undergraduate degree from Queens College in Flushing New York. He attended Medical School at New York Medical College in Valhalla New York. His internship and residency were completed at Long Island Jewish – Hillside Medical Center in New York. He completed cardiology fellowships at Columbia University, University of Massachusetts and Tufts Medical School.

Dr. Heller is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Interventional Cardiology and Nuclear Cardiology. Dr. Heller is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Heller is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. Dr. Heller is the immediate past Director of the Coronary Cardiac Unit at Piedmont Hospital.

His special interests are interventional cardiology which includes Cardiac Catheterization, Coronary and Peripheral Angioplasty, Intracoronary and Carotid Stents, and Coronary Atherectomy. Dr. Heller has been the invited lecturer for numerous professional societies, and the principal investigator in many leading edge device and pharmaceutical trials.

MANFRED A. SANDLER, M.D.
Dr. Sandler was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He received his undergraduate degree and medical degree from University of Witwatesrand in Johannesburg. Dr. Sandler furthered his post graduate education work with rotations at the University of Witwatesrand in Johannesburg. Dr. Sandler went on to complete his internship and residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked as a Clinical Instructor for one year in the Division of Cardiology at the Washington University prior to moving to Atlanta.

Dr. Sandler is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. He is a member of the American Heart Association, Medical Association of Georgia, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Currently, Dr. Sandler serves as director of the Cardiology Department, director of the Cath Lab, and is the physician service line director for Cardiology at Gwinnett Medical Center. He is Chief Medical Information Officer of the Gwinnett Hospital System, with physician responsibility for introducing computerized electronic medical patient charts into the hospital system. He was recently nominated and accepted a position on the Executive Board of the Gwinnett Chapter of the American Heart Association.

Dr. Sandler’s special interests include cardiac catheterizations, peripheral vascular studies, 2D and stress echocardiography.

MARC I. UNTERMAN, M.D.
Dr. Unterman is originally from Brooklyn, New York. He received his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and attended medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. His Internal Medicine residency was completed at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia and he completed his Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Unterman is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Interventional Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American society of Echocardiography and the College of Nuclear Cardiology. He is past Vice Chief of staff of Gwinnett Medical Center, past Chair of the Department of Medicine at Gwinnett Medical Center, and past President of the Gwinnett/Forsyth Medical Society.

Dr. Unterman's special interests are interventional cardiology which include Cardiac Catheterization, Coronary Angioplasty, Coronary Atherectomy, Intracoronary Stents, and Peripheral Vascular Angioplasty.

Markus T. Porkert, M.D.
Dr. Porkert was born in Cologne, Germany and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and he received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at University of Texas – Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. In addition, he completed his fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Porkert is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Technology.

Dr. Porkert’s special interests include cardiac CT, nuclear cardiology, cardiac catheterization, and transesophageal echocardiography.

MARY E. BERGH, M.D.
Dr. Bergh was born in Riverside, New York. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and attended medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa. She completed her internship, residency and Cardiology Fellowship at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Dr. Bergh is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Nuclear Cardiology.

Dr. Bergh's special interests include Cardiac Catheterizations, Nuclear Cardiology, Pacemaker Implantations and General Cardiology.

MICHAEL A. LIPSITT, M.D.
Dr. Lipsitt is from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He attended medical school at Hershey Medical School (Penn State) in Hershey, Pennsylvania. His Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology Fellowship were completed at the Emory Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Lipsitt is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Interventional Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and member of the Medical Association of Georgia. He is past President of the Gwinnett/Forsyth County Medical Society. He has served as Vice Chief of the Department of Medicine, Director of Critical Care at Gwinnett Medical Center and Chief of Cardiology at St. Joseph's Hospital.

His special interests are interventional cardiology which include Cardiac Catheterization, Coronary Angioplasty, Coronary Atherectomy, Intracoronary Stents, Peripheral Vascular Angioplasty and Pacemakers.

NIRAJ SHARMA, M.D.
Dr. Sharma received his Medical Degree at Medical College Jabalpur, India with subsequent post graduate medical training at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, Bombay, India, Beaumont Hospital Dublin, Waterford Regional Hospital Waterford and University Hospital Galway Ireland. His internship was completed at Yale University in Connecticut and residency at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Sharma completed his cardiology and electrophysiology fellowships at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas Texas.

Dr. Sharma is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases, and Board Certified in Electrophysiology. Dr. Sharma is a member of the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society (previously NASPE).

His special interests include treating patients with abnormal heart rhythms, ablation of arrhythmias (including atrial fibrillation) and implant of Bi-Ventricular devices (device that paces both lowers chambers of the heart), Cardiac Defibrillators and Pacemakers.

PHILIP A. ROMM, M.D.
Dr. Romm is from Woodmere, New York. He received his undergraduate degree at Queens College in Flushing, New York. He attended medical school at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His Internal Medicine residency was completed at the Miriam Hospital of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He finished his training in Interventional Cardiology at the Andreas Gruentzig Cardiovascular Center of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Romm is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Interventional Cardiology. He is a member of the Medical Association of Georgia, the American Heart Association and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Romm's special interests include Cardiac Catheterization, Coronary Angioplasty, Intracoronary Stents, and the diagnosis and treatment of lipid disorders.

SALIL J. PATEL, M.D.
Dr. Patel was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, he completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular MRI in the Department of Radiology and served on faculty at Emory University.

Dr. Patel is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Nuclear Cardiology. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Dr. Patel's special interests include cardiovascular MRI and MRA, transesophageal and stress echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and cardiac catheterization.

SHEILA E. WOODHOUSE, M.D.,FACC
Dr. Woodhouse obtained her undergraduate degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Biochemistry. After Carnegie Mellon, Dr. Woodhouse attended medical school at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She went on to complete her Internal Medicine training at Temple University Hospital. Following the completion of her Internal Medicine training, she served as Chief Resident for the Internal Medicine residency program at Temple. She continued on at Temple and completed her cardiology fellowship.

Dr. Woodhouse is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Cardiology, and Echocardiography. She is a member of the American Heart Association (Council on Women with Heart Disease), Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Association of Black Cardiologist, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, Society of Cardiac CT and the American College of Physicians.

Her special interests include congestive heart failure, echocardiography (in particular transesphogeal and stress echo), nuclear cardiology,Cardiac CT, women and heart disease and clinical/preventative cardiology.

SREENI R. GANGASANI, M.D.
Dr. Gangasani is from Hyderabad, India. He attended prestigious Kurnool Medical College of University of Health Sciences and graduated with honors. He did Internship and post graduate rotations in internal medicine at University Health Sciences Hospital. He also did Internship, Residency in Internal Medicine and Cardiology fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital, an affiliate of University of Michigan and Wayne State University in Royal Oak, Michigan. During the residency he was recognized as outstanding resident.

Dr Gangasani is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Cardiology, and Echocardiography. He is a member of American Medical Association and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr Gangasani's interests include 2D, Stress and Transesophageal echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, nuclear cardiology and pacemakers.

Nursing and Ancillary Personnel
The Cardiovascular Group P.C. has a team of nurses and other allied health professionals who assist the physicians in the hospital and our office clinics. The hospital nurses assist the physicians with rounds on patients, and in communicating with hospitalized patients and their family members. These nurses also manage the discharge planning with all patients before they leave the hospital. The office nurses are directly involved with the physicians in providing quality patient care. The nurses assist the physicians in obtaining the patients' history and triaging patients' symptoms. This allows the physicians to optimize each patient's visit.
